Now I’m living in London, the cupcake capital of the UK, I felt obliged to start hunting out the best cupcake bakeries the city has to offer! This week we visited Lola’s Bakery, which has concessions in Topshop, Selfridges and Harrods. We visited the concession in Selfridges on Oxford Street.
First off, I love the decor, it’s so pretty and clean, modern and highlighting the beauty of the cupcakes for certain! The staff were so friendly, efficient and helpful. The counter was so busy I would not have been surprised to have been rushed, but no, the staff were welcoming and calm, offering advise on which flavours were popular and which they liked. We left with a very pretty blue box of mini cupcakes (in my opinion mini is best!) we selected the following flavours:
- Rocky Road
- Black Forest Gateau (the special)
- Carrot Cake
- Red Velvet
A lovely mix of traditional and experimental flavours. The Rocky Road was my favourite and a great surprise, this flavour could quite easily have been very sickly, but instead I found a lovely vanilla sponge with a secret core of chocolate sponge and topped with mini marshmallows and chocolate icing. Delicious and just right!
The Red Velvet and Vanilla were perfect classics, traditional but well made, the icing was just right too, not too sweet or too creamy, and just the right amount!
The Black Forest Gateau cupcake was chosen because it was just so pretty, dark sponge with white buttercream icing and a whole black cherry on top, how could you resist? But for me the flavour was too rich and despite its tiny side I could not manage more than one bite.
Overall, very impressed with the selection and execution of Lola’s Bakery and I would certainly recommend it to any cupcake fan. I do have my own photo that I took on my phone, but have yet to figure out how to get it from the phone onto the computer, so here is an image I picked off the web. Note to self: start to carry own camera around for this reason!
