So REN caught everyones attention when they launched that pornographic promo video which was honestly nothing to do with skincare, but did a great job at spreading awareness of the brand and some bare bums and boobs. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just spend a few seconds on YouTube and I’m sure you’ll find it somewhere.
I knew I had to try the range when I read a 5/5 review of the Clearcalm Clay Cleanser on Caroline Hiron’s blog, Beauty Mouth, this lady knows her stuff, so if she really likes something you know it’s worth a shot! So I picked up a starter set on ASOS for around £20.
Within this REN Clearcalm Starter Set you get the Clarifying Clay Cleanser, Clarity Restoring Mask, Total Clarifying Day Fluid and Replenishing Night Serum. They are much smaller sizes than I was expecting, but plenty for you to get a good idea of the range and also a little goes a long way with this minis.
Here’s the products I’ve been trying broken down into mini reviews for you:
REN Clearcalm Clarifying Clay Cleanser
This is a really unusual consistency for a cleanser, it’s a clay base, similar to what you expect from a clay mask, but slightly smoother. It doesn’t foam which is great, it is easy and tidy to use and doesn’t leave skin feeling tight like it might with a foaming cleanser. It’s a thiner consistency than a cream cleanser (such as Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish) so you can just smooth it on and wash off without any additional ‘tools’. I’ve been using it with my French Clay Konjac Sponge for extra loveliness.
The REN Clarifying Clay Cleanser uses French Clay to help deal with excess oil, Manuka extract to soothe and nourish along with other lovely ingredients such as Salicin (from Willow bark) which is similar to Salicylic Acid, which helps to exfoliate without the scrubby bits and is there as an anti-bacterial agent, great for blemish prone skin.
REN Clearcalm Total Clarity Day Fluid
Those of you with oily skin will love this, it’s an oil free serum, which is super lightweight but very hardworking. Licorice Root will help reduce redness and decrease the production of sebum whilst Hyaluronic Acid adds hydration. There’s so many great ingredients in this, a little goes a long way and it won’t feel like you’re wearing anything on your face, so great for under make up! For me, I would prefer something with a little more moisture, but given this will generally be chosen for oily skin, it’s great!
REN Clearcalm Replenishing Night Serum
As with the Day Fluid, this is another very lightweight serum, however, this one has more of a cream texture than the fluid, it still absorbs super fast with some great ingredients. Ligonberry Extract helps treat hyper pigmentation, which is associated with sun damage and skin injury such as scarring from spots. For me, I think this really helped the redness and scarring that I had on my forehead from outbreaks. Licorice Root will also help with redness and inflammation.
REN Clearcalm Clarity Restoring Mask
This is a super creamy French Clay based mask, very similar to the Clay Cleanser in consistency, its creamy consistency makes it super easy to apply too. Packed with similar ingredients to the rest of the range we have Licorice Root Extract for reducing sebum and inflammation and Salicin from Willow Bark for anti-bac and exfoliating properties. It leaves your skin feeling soft and I feel that it helped reduce redness instantly.
Overall, I would recommend REN, the prices are afforadable and feature some really good ingredients. Plus, the whole range is free from lots of nasties including parabens, mineral oils, sulphates and silicones.
