The London Burger Adventure continued over the weekend with a visit to the burger restaurant geographically closest to my house (I think) and for some reason somewhere I’d never spotted before. Hidden away down some back streets off Hoxton Square is MEATMission, part of the MEATLiquor family and housed in what seems to be an old church hall. The whole vibe of the place is inspired by religion, which is a tad bizarre but also plays along to the rock’n’roll rebellious attitude of the brand as a whole.
You can get the impression from the stain glass on acid styling of the ceiling, pretty epic right? It’s the last supper made up of disturbing taxidermy-esque animals.
The church theme follows through into the menus, which are on simple white paper and printed in the style of a prayer book or sermon running order, I don’t think that’s the official name but you get the jist. “Food for the soul and the unholy spirit” and that kind of ramblings.
They have a great selection of craft beers (obvs) and some rather snazzy cocktails too for drinks. You can even have a Root Beer or Cola ice cream float if you’re feeling especially gluttonous. Beer can also be ordered in a large glass jar which will serve you about three pints, saving you some money and making beer drinking just a little bit more exciting.
I opted for the Hoxton Fizz, a tall cocktail of vodka, pear, lemonade and berries. It was pretty lush, fresh and light and not too alcohol flavoured. A good call for sure, although there’s tons of others that I would love to try another time. Gimme a shout if you’ve been and tried something else that you loved.
Obviously, we had to have burgers, although they do serve other American inspired food such as hot dogs and wings. My other half, Miz opted for a classic Cheeseburger, whereas I went for the Green Chilli Burger (without onions, because I hate them) this burger was lush. Green chillies fried in butter, with cheese, mustard and ketchup, lettuce and the juiciest beef patty, cooked medium to perfection. Super messy to eat, which is always a good sign, but don’t worry, you’re provided with your own personal roll of kitchen roll to act as a plate and tidy up!
The fries are super crisp and you get tons to a portion, I reckon we would share next time. Only complaint with the fries is they come pre seasoned and were a touch too salty for my taste, but I still ate them all, so they can’t have been that bad!
MEATMission also run a Triple Chilli Challenge, which isn’t described in any of the menus but the internet tells me it’s a challenge to eat the chilli dog, burger and fries in under ten minutes. If you achieve that you get your name on this board.
Do you know what else is awesome? They have a photo booth in an old confessions booth. We couldn’t resist!
Where’s your fave burger place in London?
