I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself, everytime I write up one of these burger reviews (or any food related matter for that sake) it just makes it mega hungry and craving naughty food. Continuing the burger quest last week, we headed around the corner and across the road to Bukowski Charcoal Grill on the top of Boxpark in Shoreditch as we had a challenger claiming they were the best burgers in London!
The Boxpark branch of Bukowski is super tiny, but as with our usual strategy, go at a weird time and you’ll find it simpler to get a seat inside. Alternatively, if the weather is decent, there’s tons of seats outside at Boxpark which are heated should you want to venture al fresco with your burger pals.
As with many of the burger places in London, the menu is concise, although, at Bukowski they don’t serve just burgers, you can also get pulled pork or hanger steak sandwiches too, among other things. When it comes to burgers there’s seven to choose from, including one monthly special and the option to customise anything you like. We went for The Purist which as standard comes with tomatoes, lettuce and mayo, to mix things up we added our burger toppings of choice, cheese and bacon.
The bun is a super soft brioche bun, in true burger style. The beef patty is chunky and juicy cooked medium rare as a standard, the way meat should always be cooked in my opinion. Just the right amount of toppings applied too, which is great for me as only a recent mayo convert. The bacon was placed in a rather theatrical cross shape, which was a tad annoying as needed manoeuvring to make it easy to eat, but they only did this to look cool, so I kinda get it. Just the right amount of cheese too and none of it lasted very long. I had that common moment for me, when I scoff it too quickly and then feel the verges of depression that it’s over and there is no more burger times (for now).
Chips are small portions at an additional cost, but come triple cooked in dripping and super chunky. These babies were cooked to perfection too, crisp on the outside and like little cuboids of mashed potatoes inside, totally lush! Drinks wise they have a nice selection of craft beer and indie cider including Meantime and for soft drinks you can choose from interesting options such as Hibiscus Iced Tea and Homemade Lemonade.
Service and venue are excellent, food is delish. Prices are slightly higher than others if you go for customising options, but totally worth it to get exactly what you’re after. I’d say ranked among out other burger adventures so far, Bukowski scores highly, but Honest Burgers are still winning on yumminess and MEATMission is winning for choice and awesome venue. More to come soon no doubt!
