Here’s another contender for best burger in London! Burger Bear was originally set up at a pub in Nunhead, near Peckham and it one that my friend Jess has been raving about for quite sometime, but it’d been too far out to venture a visit. So, when I heard they were going to run a East London pop up on Thursday and Friday lunchtimes at new venue, Trapeze, we had to check it out.
Trapeze is a circus themed venue, on Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, I love it! It’s got seating booths made out of vintage Wurlizer rides and the walls and ceiling are decorated with circus memorabilia, it’s very cool.
At present, the Burger Bear menu is limited, they just do burgers, no sides but the menu is rather epic, so we’ll let them off. I love the simple, but cute menu branding. It’s got classics covered and a couple of exciting bits and bobs too such as the Triple Threat and the Angry Bear featuring #HolyFuck hot sauce, which is clearly genius because it’s got a swear and a hashtag in it. Win.
We both went for the Grizzly Bear, a bacon cheeseburger with the addition of Bacon Jam, something that I’ve never heard of before other than from Burger Bear. I have no idea how Bacon Jam is made or what it taste like on it’s on but as an addition to a burger I can tell you it’s awesome. With my burger experience so far, I’m still rating MEATMission/Liquor higher than this one, but it’s a close one and I think I prefer the Burger Bear atmosphere a little bit more.
The trimmings on the burger are kept classic with mustard, mayo and lettuce (no onions for me!) and the bun is super soft of squishy, just how I like them. The patty is juicy and cooked to perfection, I prefer a chunky patty so this one definitely pleased me.
Drinks wise, Trapeze has an awesome selection of cocktail, which we didn’t have chance to sample this time, but we’ll certainly be returning for a boozy Burger Bear lunch soon. What else makes this pop up special? Well, they have DJs playing disco music, because you know what? Why not?
