Meet Twinkie Chan, she’s totally kawaii…

Here’s a different type of post for you today and something that I hope to do on a regular basis. I want to start highlighting more talent and people that have inspired me and that are so awesome that you need to know about. Today it’s kawaii crochet mastermind and fellow blogger, Twinkie Chan!

Twinkie Chan has definitely been a inspiration to me over the years with her colourful and kitsch style and dedication to creating quirky crochet things. Here’s a little interview I did with this beauty.

Was crochet always your craft of choice? How did you discover this love?

It actually took me a little while to figure out what I loved most. Growing up, I painted, sculpted, latch-hooked, decoupaged… I dabbled in a lot of crafts and was always into making unique gifts! My friend’s grandmother taught us how to crochet when I was about 10 years old, and I would crochet from time to time throughout the years. I picked it up again back in 2005 when I discovered handspan yarn online, and after that, I’ve been all about crochet! All the talented people who were spinning creative and exciting yarns really inspired me to crochet more, because I wanted to buy all their pretty skeins.

What or who is your main inspiration for your designs and personal style?

I have always had sort of a silly sense of humor, so my obsession with creating a line of food-themed scarves stemmed from me wanting to amuse myself and make some never-seen-before accessories just for me. I had no idea that other people would love them, too! My nostalgic love for play-food is definitely a strong influence on both my designs and my style. I just think we should all feel the joy in having fun with our crafting and our fashion! These days I’m also really inspired by the color and energy of Japanese street fashion, plus the idea that “cute” never goes out of style!

What was the first thing you ever remember making?

I remember making clay squirrel sculptures with my aunt, and we’d use her dog’s long, thick hairs as squirrel whiskers!

What’s your current favourite thing in your shop?

Well, currently my shop is a bit empty because I de-activated a lot of custom items in order to write my second crochet book.  But I really have been loving my corn dog pen cozies. They’re just super silly and eye-catching, yet still somehow useful!

You were one of the inspirations behind starting my blog, what inspired you to start blogging?

Oh, that’s so sweet! I think you’re much better at blogging than I am! In school, I studied English and Creative Writing in Fiction. I have always been drawn to stories and story telling. One day at the office, when I was working in publishing, I stumbled randomly upon someone’s blog. It was really boring, and nobody posted photos back then, but I was so fascinated by the idea of real people sharing their lives with the universe. At first I started blogging personally, to share stories with friends and not have to repeat myself over and over, but to be honest, none of my friends have been avid readers of my blog! At the time, I still loved that I could casually practice my writing regularly in my blog stories, and while my blog has become a bit less personal and more about my work, I still enjoy in sharing my life and hope that it makes someone smile.

What advice would you give to a newbie blogger or crocheter?

Find your special niche, and be the best that you can be at it! I think this goes for both blogging and crocheting. There’s already a lot of everything out there, so if you want to stand out, you need to create something you really love and are super proud of, and that you can be identified by. Always put your best foot forward, take the highest quality photos you can, write the highest quality content that you can, make the highest quality items that you can, and be yourself 100%. Don’t try to mimic anyone else!
