When we lived in London one of our favourite things to do was to go for a burger. We went to pretty much all of the places that made it onto any best burger in London list and generally our top 3 include MEATMission, Burger Bear and Dirty Burger. A few weeks ago we were in Barcelona and we found a burger that may just rival our London top three, The Bacoa Burger at Bacoa.
Bacoa is a small chain in Barcelona, they restaurants but they mainly have Shake Shack/Five Guys style cafes where you use a paper tick menu to select what you want and then pay at the desk, they swap you for a little beeper which goes off when your food is ready and they bring it over. The system is a bit weird because they don’t really optimise the novelties of the beeper or the tick list, but meh, it’s the food that counts!
This is the Bacoa Burger, it’s an organic beef patty topped with Manchego, Irish Cheddar, semi-cured cheese, pickles and spicy mustard. They also add on tomato, cos lettuce and more mayo (we had ours without onions, but they come with Spanish onions normally) Although, they do offer conventional fries you can also have steamed potatoes with alioli (what we had) or patas bravas. Doesn’t it look lush?! The potatoes were amazing, really buttery soft boiled potatoes with the perfect alioli, felt lighter than fries but equally tasty.
The bun is perfect, a white bread (although you can choose wholemeal) topped with poppy seeds and perfectly toasted. So many toppings too, but perfectly layered for just the right amount of mess with that perfectly cooked medium beef. I loved how fresh and tasty this was without feeling greasy or heavy like some do, the pickles and lettuce added just the right amount of crunch too.
You also get provided with a cardboard burger holder which was the first time ever we’ve seen that, it seemed like a genius idea but once you get about half way through it became a nuisance and I think it’s easier to just eat and deal with the mess. Anyway, BEST BURGER EVER, quite possibly. So good that we had the same thing twice in the space of two days. They also sell a great selection of drinks including craft beers and it’s all great value for money. You can check out their website for more info.
