At the end of November, me and Miz celebrated a year since our first date with a special lunch out. We left the house without much plan and ended up ticking off a Brighton Bucketlist Restaurant off the list in the form of famous Oyster and Champagne restaurant Riddle and Finns. They have two locations in Brighton, one tucked away in the Laines and one in the glorious seafront with a view of the old pier, if you get a seat up stairs and the weather is clear the view is incredible!

First off, I’m very happy to say that despite the high brow, super classy look of this place it wasn’t at all intimidating to visit, the staff were super welcoming and chatty, we didn’t feel awkward like we did walking into some other possible eateries that day. The Riddle and Finns seafront restaurant is quite small, so I would imagine that at peak time you would be best to book, but on a weekday lunchtime it was easy to just walk in off the street and get seated right away. PLUS, they gave us fresh baked bread with dips and this always pleases me, I could eat endless bread and spread and this was particularly nomilicious.

As many of you will know, I used to be such a fussy eater, so to finally be at a stage where I can go somewhere like this and actually choose something and actually eat and enjoy it is quite amazing. Anyway, because we were on a budget and wanted to try a couple of things we opted to get a couple of sides and appetizers instead of a main, this is a great option too as the portions are really decent and for lunch this works great. Here’s the pan fried scallops with chilli and chorizo, isn’t it pretty? Also delicious, really enjoyed this and can 100% confirm that I now like scallops, I think this was the second time ever that I had tried them.

Next up, was Miz’s seasonal choice of Razorclams cooked in white wine. These ones looked less appetising to me, but Miz really enjoyed them, I only tried one and they weren’t for me, I think this is part due to them being cooked with onions (which I hate) and in white wine which I’m also not a fan of. Either way, awesome to find out what these tasted like after picking up the empty shells on the beach so often as a kid.

Half a pint of prawns didn’t sound too challenging, FYI it’s more than you think it’s going to be. Here’s another first for me, I’ve had prawns before but have never had them cold or with their shells intact. They look so freaking weird and I’m pretty sure I would not have ever tried these before, I’m proud to say that I nommed up more than half of these. Even with their weird little beady eyes, totally delicious.

The bill came to around £40, which considering the amazing service, beautiful setting and incredible quality of food seems completely fair. If you had more of a budget though you could easily spend around £100 for a meal for two, that might happen one day, but right now I’m totally happy with this for a fancy lunch option and will definitely visit again for another special occasion.
