Review: TreeHouse Villas Koh Yao Noi, Thailand - #OddOdyssey

Our first thought whilst writing this review was how sad we were to have left paradise, visiting tropical islands might be our new favourite thing. After a few weeks in Thailand’s Phuket, we jetted off via van and then speedboat to a small secluded island known as Koh Yao Noi. Located between Phuket and Krabi, close to the famous James Bond Island and Phi Phi Islands, you won’t be disappointed with this paradise-like tropical location. Recently opened in early 2018, a new luxury adults-only resort awaits you in the stunning shape of TreeHouse Villas.

Check out our video of TreeHouse Villas on our new Odd Odyssey YouTube Channel!
Stepping off the jetty you’ll feel like you’ve walked into the Ewok Village from Star Wars or something out of Jurassic Park meets Avatar. Stunning two storey villas with an Elvish Rivendell vibe, beachfront pool villas and a variety of sleek outdoor eating and drinking locations nestled amongst the most beautiful tropical gardens, all sitting neatly amongst the dense jungle beyond. Before you’ve even said hello to the staff, you’ll be greeted by tropical fish, butterflies, dragonflies and an endless variety of birds, frogs and lizards. Welcome to paradise, welcome to TreeHouse Villas. Cue the Jurassic Park theme tune.

Guests at TreeHouse Villas are welcomed at Roots, thecentral restaurant and bar of the luxury island resort, where you’ll also find the main pool area and reception. Greeted by friendly staff and a gorgeous purple welcome drink, you can’t help but feel instantly pampered. These pretty welcome drinks gain their lilac hues from the Butterfly Pea, an iconic ingredient in South East Asia which is commonly used as a natural dye too. You’ll spot the plant amongst the gardens if you pay attention.

Accommodation Options at TreeHouse Villas, Koh Yao Noi

Once check-in is complete, you’ll be escorted to your luxury villa. There are three accommodation types on offer at TreeHouse Villas:

  • TreeHouse Villa: the resorts signature two-storey accommodation which includes a lower level with plunge pool and open-air bar, dining area, swing and loungers. Ideal for taking in the jungle vibes whilst unwinding with a drink by the pool. The second level features your huge bed, bathroom and balcony. Each TreeHouse is set in a unique area of the surrounding gardens offering beautiful views and privacy.
  • Beachfront Pool Villa: these beauties feature all the same elements of the TreeHouse Villas but set along the beach and on only one storey. As the name suggests, these villas feature a larger private pool instead of a plunge pool.
  • Hilltop Pool Villa: for the ultimate slice of privacy and luxury, plus enough room for four. This luxury house sits right on the hilltop with the most incredible views. Enjoy a large private infinity pool and plenty of space to unwind tucked well away from the rest of the guests.

We were lucky enough to enjoy one night in a Beachfront Pool Villa and honestly, didn’t want to ever leave. Inside you’ll find complete comfort and luxury whilst immediately feeling totally at home. A huge and cosy king size bed sits in the centre, looking out onto the ocean. Furnishings are stylish, rustic and extremely practical including a sofa, large desk and mini bar with coffee and tea making facilities. Almost everything in the mini bar is complimentary too. The only things you’ll have to add to your bill are wine, champagne and couple of snacky things. The bathroom is a large, open plan affair with twin sinks, open-air style shower and a stunning, patented hammock shaped bath tub. You don’t need to worry about bringing toiletries with you because shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, bath salts and lotion are included, encased in stunning ceramic containers and featuring a bespoke fragrance that’s unique to TreeHouse Villas.

Step outside onto the decking for stunning sea views, a (probably accidentally pizza slice shaped) private pool, swing sofa, sun loungers and an outdoor bar area with table and chairs. Here, you’ll also find your second mini bar which even includes complimentary Japanese Whiskey and Spanish Vodka that you can enjoy with your complimentary mixers. There’s also a storeroom (where you can put the outdoor cushions if it rains and find some cleaning supplies if needed) and a second toilet to avoid a wet run through the villa mid-swim. The gorgeous pool also features jacuzzi jets for relaxing as well as being large enough in size to get some exercise into your day without going very far.

Since the resort is new, the surrounding greenery is still in its early stages of growth, meaning this rainy season is sure to give the garden areas a massive boost. Once the trees and plants are fully grown in, they should offer some stunning extra privacy to each villa whilst adding to that wonderful jungle vibe. The well-maintained gardens are already attracting some pretty incredible wildlife. We must have seen thirty different types of butterflies within the first hour of our visit as well as clusters of dragonflies almost constantly. If you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll spot the local birdlife too, which includes the majestic Oriental Pied Hornbill, we were lucky to spot them right outside our villa more than once. At night look out for the friendly bug eating geckos, hermit crabs and a vast list of other wildlife lurking close by.

Activities and Facilities at TreeHouse Villas

Although it might feel like you’re stranded on a desert island with nothing else in sight other than the resort and Paradise KohYao; it’s mother brand next door, there’s plenty to entertain you whilst staying at TreeHouse Villas. Guests can enjoy access to the facilities at the resort next door, which includes a spa and various bars and dining options. TreeHouse Villas guests also have access to an exclusive pool, herbal steam room and Roots restaurant and bar that are all peacefully child-free. We didn’t have time to try out any of the activities on offer but you can do anything from a Thai cooking class, kayaking, spa treatments and jungle trekking to a tour of the local village, yoga classes or batik painting. There’s also a complimentary daily boat to another private island and plenty more activities available on request. Each day you’ll be delivered a newsletter with updated offers and deals on various dishes, spa treatments and activities too, so keep an eye out if you’re looking to make a little saving whilst living in luxury.

If being lazy and chilling out is more your thing, you’ll be more than happy staying in the confines of your room too. The ample mini bar and room service menu allow you to do just that and in the evening you might even get a hand delivered mini hammock of local fruits to snack on like we did. Whilst wandering the resort you’ll see guests enjoying their open-air seating areas whilst reading a book, sipping a glass of wine and even working on crochet projects. If you need time away from the city and the stresses of modern life, you will find the ideal escape at TreeHouse Villas.

Food and Drink at TreeHouse Villas

We ate two meals and breakfast at the Roots restaurant and bar and were overwhelmed by the choice on the menu. The menu features Western classics like fish & chips and other similar meat and veg options as well as sections dedicated to Italian classics and Thai traditional dishes. Whether you’re after comfort food or looking to try something new, you’ll be sorted with this menu and everything we tried totally hit the spot. Drinks wise, there are mocktails, juices, teas and shakes as well as a stunning cocktail menu and excellent choice of spirits and beers. The cocktail menu in particular, is impressive, featuring creative mixes inspired by local flavours, fruits and nature, plus if you’re looking for something a little stronger the bar also offers Whiskey Tasting Flights.

If you’re staying longer and want to explore more food and drink options, TreeHouse Villas guests are also welcome to use one of four more bar and restaurant options over at Paradise KohYao which is a short walk away along the beach. We particularly loved their bean bags on the beach for a chilled out cocktail escape at sunset but we’ll talk about this resort in a separate post! Breakfast is a combination of a well-stocked buffet and a selection of delicious menu items, it was by far the best breakfast we’ve eaten since starting our Asian adventure.

How to get to TreeHouse Villas

When it was time to check out, we spent a few minutes writing a few complimentary postcards, which you can leave with the reception with your stamp cost to have forwarded for you, this is a lovely touch and something we hadn’t seen before. All your transfers can be organised on your behalf by the hotel and include boat transfers to and from Krabi and Phuket as well as onward transport via van. We loved our speedboat trips to and from the island and were really impressed with how stress-free it all was. You can easily access TreeHouse Villas in just over an hour from either Phuket or Krabi airport.

We want to thank TreeHouse Villas for inviting us to stay for a complimentary night and are very happy to be able to support such a stunning new Thai island destination. You can find great deals on TreeHouse Villas during off-peak season and the resort would make an ideal, dream location for a honeymoon, anniversary, wedding or another special occasion. We really hope we can return one day, if only to see how the surrounding area has grown to embrace this stunning resort. We extend a massive thank you to all at TreeHouse Villas for your warm welcome, excellent service and beautiful hard work to create such a special place. Around 95% of the staff at TreeHouse Villas are Thai, so as well as catering to international visitors, the resort is also creating jobs and opportunities for locals, whilst embracing local traditions and culture.
